The Bognor Regis Museum of Local History is run by the Local History Society. The museum opened at its present site on 11th May 1997. Although modest in size the members of the society have clearly put a great deal of thought and hard work into creating a range of interesting and informative exhibits. Almost every aspect of Bognor's history is represented, from rocks and fossils millions of years old, the local history before the town was built and then from the towns creation through to the present day.

The Wireless Museum has a simulation of a 30 line television receiver. The picture was sent via Medium Wave radio signal, the picture was produced by a mechanical spinning disc.

Mr. K Crum founded the Bognor Regis Local History Society in January 1979 and in September that year the first AGM was held. One of the first decisions made by the fledgling society was that Bognor should re-instate its museum. The original museum closed in the late 1960's and it's exhibits passed onto museums in other surrounding towns. One of the first problems the Society faced was finding a home for the proposed museum, eventually in 1983 with the support of Arun District Council and the Bognor Regis Town Council the Society obtained Park Lodge in Hotham Park.

Can you remember any of the beauty items in the chemists display?

On the 30th June 1984 the new Bognor Regis Museum officially opened its doors to the public. The museum immediately proved popular with both the local people and visitors to the town. Unfortunately the Park Lodge had to close in 1995 due to vandalism, undaunted by this the Society set about looking for a new site. In May 1997 the museum re-opened in High Street, Bognor.

The Victorian Kitchen has been improved and two steps away is the entrance to the Wireless Museum.

This years exhibits include a camera display of vintage cameras donated to the Museum by members of the public. Fossils, a working Meccano model and a Hardware shop. There are also scale models showing the High Street as it was with the sadly missed Southdown's Bus Station, the Esplanade Theatre and Hotham House. As well as old favorites such as the Victorian kitchen, Mary Wheatland and the Wireless Museum.

A display of transport memorabelia of days gone past, model trains and posters and pictures showing Bognors history.

Apart from the very interesting exhibits, the museum sells a number of very good local guides, covering places of interest, fossils and Inns and Taverns. You can also purchase copies of the Bognor Regis Local History Society Newsletter which cover many aspects of Bognors history not usually covered in mainstream publications. Please remember that like many small local museums the people who do most of the hard work are volunteers and donations from the public are an important source of income that help keep the museum open.
