01 - ERIC COATES (1886-1957) Composer of many memorable marches and rhapsodies, perhaps his best known are 'The Knightsbridge March', 'By the Sleepy Lagoon' and the 'Dambusters March'. Location: 6 Aldwick Avenue. 02 - R C SHERRIFF (1896-1975) Playwright and scriptwriter. His most noted play is 'Journey's End'. He also wrote the script for Hollywood classics such as 'The Four Feathers', 'Goodbye Mr Chips' and 'Lady Hamilton'. His best selling novel 'The Fortnight in September' was inspired by, and set in, Bognor. Location: Sandmartins, Kings Parade. 03 - VICTOR WHITECHURCH (1868-1933) Originally a parson he later became Canon of Christ Church College, Oxford, but he is famous as the creator of the railway detective Thorpe Hazel!. His genre was impossible crime on the railways and spy stories, many of which appeared in Strand Magazine. Location: 'The Holt', Victoria Road. 04 - TONY HANCOCK (1924-1968) Comedian and actor Tony Hancock stayed at the Royal Norfolk in 1962 while filming the classic comedy “The Punch & Judy Man”. Location: Royal Norfolk Hotel (Non-Arun Plaque) 05 - JOSEPH WITHAM (1832-1901) The marine artist was born here in 1832. He is best known for his ship portraits of vessels using Liverpool Docks. Some of his work can be seen at the National Maritime Museum. Location: 30 West Street. 06 - DANTE GABRIEL ROSSETTI (1828-1882) Poet, painter and leading member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. Romantic love was the main inspiration for both his poetry and painting. For a short period Rosetti had a studio in Bognor. Location: Belmont Lodge, Belmont Street. 07 - JAMES JOYCE (1882-1941) Novelist, famous for his book 'Ulysses'. Worked on his other classic 'Finnegans Wake' while staying in Bognor in 1923. Location: 6 Clarence Road. 08 - HENRY GUERMONPREZ (1858-1924) Self-taught natural historian and botanist lived in Bognor while recording and collecting the plant and wildlife of West Sussex. The Guermonprez Collection can be seen at Portsmouth City Museum. Location: St Joseph's, Albert Road. 09 - SIR RICHARD HOTHAM (1722-1799) Hatter and entrepreneur Sir Richard Hotham was elected MP for Southwark in 1780. In 1787 work began on a purpose built holiday resort for the gentry, the new town of Bognor had been founded. Location: Hotham Park House, Hotham Park (Non-Arun Plaque). 10 - WILLIAM WARD HIGGS (1866-1936) Best known for his composition "Sussex-by-the-Sea", this popular song was adopted by Brighton & Hove Albion FC in 1910 and then became the official song of the Royal Sussex Regiment in 1914. It can still be heard at the Lewes bonfire celebrations and has become the county anthem. Location: Hollywood House, Bersted Street (Non-Arun Plaque) 11 & 12 - WILLIAM BLAKE (1757-1827) Artist, poet and mystic. His most famous poem is probably 'The Tyger'. He moved to Felpham at the invitation of William Hayley in 1800, In 1803 he was accused of sedition and arrested at the Fox Inn. He was later acquitted of the charge to the cheers of the locals. Location: Blake's Cottage, Blake's Road & The Fox Inn, Felpham. 12 - GEORGE MORLAND (1763-1804) Artist, famous for his rustic scenes idealising peasant life. Morland often gave pictures in lieu of money to pay his debts. At the Fox Inn, Felpham he painted a ship on the wall to pay his rent. Location: Fox Inn, Felpham. 13 - WILLIAM HAYLEY (1745-1820) Biographer and poet. Hayley is more famous for his patronage of artists such as George Romney and William Blake than for his own works. He lived at Turret House in Felpham. Location: Limmer Lane, Felpham. 14 - GERARD YOUNG (1912-1972) Writer for film, theatre and columnist for the Bognor Post, an enthusiastic local historian who compiled a full history of Bognor Regis and the surrounding area. He, more than anyone, stimulated people's interest in the history of Bognor Regis, a tradition continued by the Bognor Regis Local History Society today.
